To celebrate Human Rights Day on Friday 21 March 2014, Youth Empowerment Solutions held a Sports Day for the youth at Curries Fountain Sports Development Centre. The youth came from churches of several different branches around the Ethekwini and Msunduzi Municipality. The aim of the day was to encourage and motivate youth to participate in sport activities to maintain their bodies, promote healthy lifestyles, as well as create awareness about environmental issues. The activities for the day included soccer, netball, volleyball and athletics. The event was attended by over 700 youth who were accompanied by church officers. They expressed great excitement in winning points towards their team, which resulted in trophies and medals being awarded to teams with the most points.

The Ethekwini Trucking Sector Wellness Forum was formed in 2009 and its main purpose is fighting the increase of HIV and AIDS in the trucking sector. The purpose of the Wellness Day was to promote wellness and healthy lifestyle amongst the trucking fraternity, involve truck drivers and their families in the fight against HIV and AIDS and provide a fun-filled day that encouraged community and family involvement. There were various stakeholders promoting healthy life style and wellness services, entertainment for the whole family and sporting events - ( soccer, netball, tug of war).

Director of the KZN Blind and Deaf Society, Nad Ramsarup, had this to say, “Sport is as good for KZN Blind and Deaf Society clients as for anyone else, and we employ two sports co-ordinators to help those with impaired sight or hearing respectively. We practice blind cricket and goal ball for blind people, and soccer, netball, volleyball and badminton for the deaf. Finding suitable practice grounds for our deaf clients proved very difficult for many months, until we approached Curries Fountain Management whose positive response delighted us. A particular advantage of Curries Fountain is its central location with easy access for our deaf clients. They are very accommodating towards us and professionally prepare the pitches according to our needs. Our experience at Curries Fountain is always pleasant and we look forward to a long, healthy relationship with them.” |
