Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) celebrated its 30th anniversary in Durban on Saturday 5 December 2015. Thousands of workers converged at Curries Fountain for the anniversary rally.
Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa, South African Communist Party General Secretary, Blade Nzimande, and Cosatu President, S'dumo Dlamini addressed the crowd. KwaZulu-Natal secretary, Edwin Mkhize, said that the focus of the Union will be on recognising achievements of the past three decades. He added that they are at a phase that needs workers to unite in order to confront the exploitative system of capitalism and exploitation of workers in the workplace. With the anniversary rally, the Cosatu leadership had an opportunity to reassure workers that it is still focused on fighting for their interests and not each other as they emerge from the elective congress.
